How would you like to join others in an organized bird count without leaving home? Yes, you can!

Each year during the month of February, the National Audubon Society conducts The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC). The event lasts four days. It’s fun, easy, and it shouldn’t cost you dime.

“Participants are asked to count birds for as little as 15 minutes (or as long as they wish) on one or more days of the four-day event and report their sightings online at birdcount.org. Anyone can take part in the Great Backyard Bird Count, from beginning bird watchers to experts, and you can participate from your backyard, or anywhere in the world.”

Besides having fun, what’s the point? Believe it or not, this event provides lots of useful information on bird populations and migrations. With data in hand, strategies can be formed and implemented to preserve our birds.

The next Great Backyard Bird Count will take place Friday, February 14 through Monday, February 18, 2020. Go to the official website at birdcount.org for more information.

Until then, buy new bird feeders, bird baths, and nest boxes to prepare for the great event!
