Garden Hyacinths are the grandest of the three, producing substantial spikes crowded with wonderfully fragrant flowers. Their colors range far beyond the familiar blue and purple to include white, pink, rose, and other shades. Plant them where their perfume can be appreciated—beside a walk, near a doorway, or in containers close to the house.

Muscari, commonly called Grape Hyacinths, are smaller and wonderfully useful. Their little clusters of bell-shaped flowers appear in rich blues and other shades, making them ideal for edging beds, filling spaces among larger bulbs, or planting in generous drifts. Given favorable conditions, many will multiply and return year after year.

Bluebells bring a different character altogether. Their nodding bells and graceful stems are natural companions for woodland gardens, beneath deciduous trees, and in informal plantings where they can spread into colonies. Few spring scenes are more romantic than a shaded garden floor scattered with bluebells.
