Ranunculus: Layers of Color for the Spring Garden
Posted by John Marshall on
Few spring flowers can match the extravagant beauty of Ranunculus. Their blossoms are composed of layer upon layer of delicate petals, opening into remarkably full flowers that sometimes resemble miniature peonies or old-fashioned roses.
Our seasonal collection of Ranunculus corms has arrived at GoGardenNow, offering gardeners a splendid range of colors for beds, borders, containers, and the cutting garden.
Ranunculus are particularly admired for their extraordinary palette. Depending on the variety, flowers may appear in glowing shades of red, rose, pink, salmon, orange, yellow, cream, white, burgundy, and beautiful mixtures and picotee forms. Planted generously, they can create a spring display almost unmatched for richness of color.
Magnificent Flowers for Cutting
Ranunculus are among the finest flowers for the cutting garden. Their strong stems and densely petaled blossoms make handsome bouquets and arrangements, while successive buds can provide flowers over an extended period under favorable conditions.
Plant enough for the garden—and a few more for the vase.
Growing Ranunculus
Ranunculus grow from curious little corms sometimes described as resembling claws. Despite their unpromising appearance, those small corms contain the makings of remarkably sumptuous flowers.
They prefer abundant sunshine, fertile soil, and excellent drainage. In mild-winter climates, Ranunculus may be planted in fall for spring flowering. Where winters are colder, planting is generally delayed until late winter or spring, or the plants are given appropriate winter protection.
Containers are another excellent choice, particularly where drainage or winter weather makes growing them in the ground more difficult.
A Spring Garden Luxury
There is something almost extravagant about a bed of Ranunculus in full flower. Their neat, many-petaled blossoms possess the formality of a rose while retaining the fresh character of a spring bulb garden.
Plant them in sweeping groups for a brilliant display, mingle complementary colors through a border, or devote a sunny bed to varieties intended especially for cutting.
Explore our seasonal collection of Ranunculus at GoGardenNow and plant for a spring filled with layer upon layer of glorious color.
