Plant This Fall for a Spectacular Spring: Ornamental Alliums

Posted by John Marshall on

Some of the most memorable flowers of the spring and early-summer garden begin with a rather unremarkable bulb planted in autumn.

Our fall collection of Ornamental Allium bulbs has arrived at GoGardenNow, offering gardeners an opportunity to plant these remarkable members of the onion family for next year’s display. Their distinctive flower heads rise on strong, slender stems, sometimes forming great globes of purple, violet, pink, or white that seem to float above the garden.

Alliums are especially valuable for bringing height, structure, and architectural interest to perennial borders and mixed plantings. Smaller varieties are charming along paths and toward the front of the border, while the great globe-flowered sorts can make dramatic punctuation marks among roses, perennials, and ornamental grasses.

Fall is the traditional planting season. Set the bulbs into well-drained soil before winter, and they will quietly establish themselves underground before making their appearance in spring.

Best of all, ornamental Alliums combine beautifully with many familiar garden plants. Plant them singly for an occasional accent or, better yet, in generous groups where their extraordinary flowers can make a proper show.

Explore our fall collection of Ornamental Allium bulbs at GoGardenNow and plant now for flowers next season.
