Amaryllis: Magnificent Hippeastrum for Winter Flowers

Posted by John Marshall on

Few bulbs can produce such a grand display with so little fuss as Amaryllis, the magnificent flowering bulbs botanically known as Hippeastrum.

Our seasonal collection of Amaryllis (Hippeastrum) bulbs has arrived at GoGardenNow, offering spectacular flowers just when the outdoor garden is settling into its winter rest. From a large bulb emerges a stout flower stalk crowned with enormous trumpet-shaped blooms—sometimes so perfect and richly colored that they hardly seem real.

Amaryllis varieties range from traditional scarlet and deep crimson to snowy white, blush pink, salmon, striped, and beautifully patterned forms. Some produce great single trumpets, while others bear double or more unusual flowers.

They are wonderfully easy to enjoy indoors. Pot the bulb with its upper portion above the soil, place it in bright light, and water carefully as growth begins. In time, the seemingly dormant bulb awakens and produces one of winter's finest floral displays.

Amaryllis also make splendid holiday plants and gifts. With a little planning, several varieties can be started at intervals to provide flowers through much of the winter.

And although we commonly call them Amaryllis, most of the large-flowered bulbs sold under that name belong to the genus Hippeastrum. Whatever name you choose, the result is the same: enormous flowers and a welcome touch of the garden during the darkest months of the year.

Explore our seasonal collection of Amaryllis (Hippeastrum) bulbs at GoGardenNow and bring the pleasure of magnificent flowers indoors this winter.
