Taraxacum (Common Dandelion) with Woolly Bear Caterpillar and Moth – Colorized Reproduction from Erucarum Ortus (1717) – GoGardenNow Exclusive
This colorized reproduction depicts Taraxacum, the common dandelion, with its bright golden blossoms and jagged green leaves. Alongside the plant appear the stages of a moth’s life cycle, eggs, caterpillar, chrysalis, and adult, showing the hairy “woolly bear” caterpillar feeding upon the leaves before its transformation into a patterned moth. Originally engraved for Johannes Goedaert’s Erucarum Ortus (1717), this plate captures the beauty of a humble wildflower entwined with the mysterious rhythms of metamorphosis.
Johannes Goedaert (1617 to 1668), a Dutch painter and naturalist from Middelburg, devoted his life to recording the transformations of insects and their relationship with plants. Without microscopes or formal training, he raised caterpillars and carefully documented their life stages, pairing them with their natural host plants. His Erucarum Ortus, translated as The Origin of Caterpillars, Worms, and Flies, was published posthumously and became one of the earliest illustrated works of entomology, inspiring later naturalists like Maria Sibylla Merian. Goedaert’s legacy lies in his unique ability to unite art, curiosity, and science in a way that continues to inspire collectors today.
This reproduction is a GoGardenNow exclusive, offered only through our curated collection of historic botanical and entomological prints.
