Sarracenia ‘Metalized’
Sarracenia ‘Metalized’ is a distinctive hybrid pitcher plant valued for its glossy, richly colored traps and strong upright growth. The tall tubular pitchers often develop deep tones of crimson, burgundy, and green, with a smooth surface that can appear almost polished in bright sunlight. This subtle sheen gives the plant a metallic look that inspired its memorable name.
The upright traps rise elegantly from the crown and feature a flared mouth beneath a gracefully arched hood. In good light, fine veining and contrasting coloration near the throat add depth and detail to the pitchers, making the plant an eye-catching specimen in any carnivorous plant display.
Like all North American pitcher plants, the leaves are modified into insect-catching traps. Nectar produced along the rim attracts insects, which slip into the smooth interior of the pitcher and are guided downward by fine hairs into digestive fluid at the base. This remarkable adaptation allows the plant to thrive in nutrient-poor, acidic soils where most other plants would struggle.
During the growing season, Sarracenia ‘Metalized’ produces a handsome clump of tall pitchers that bring dramatic color and texture to bog plantings. The dark tones of the traps contrast beautifully with sphagnum moss and companion bog plants. In early spring, nodding flowers appear on tall stems before the new pitchers begin to develop.
