Sarracenia flava ‘Supermax’
Sarracenia flava ‘Supermax’ is an impressive selection of the classic yellow pitcher plant, celebrated for its exceptionally large and vigorous traps. This striking cultivar produces tall, commanding pitchers that rise prominently above the bog, often reaching impressive height when grown in ideal conditions. The bright yellow-green tubes are typically accented with bold red veining near the throat and hood, creating a dramatic contrast that becomes more pronounced in strong sunlight.
A cultivated selection of the North American native yellow pitcher plant (Sarracenia flava).
The tall trumpet-shaped leaves serve as efficient insect traps. Nectar produced along the rim attracts insects, and once they slip inside the smooth interior of the tube, downward-pointing hairs guide them toward the digestive fluid at the base of the pitcher. Through this remarkable adaptation, the plant gathers nutrients from captured insects rather than from the nutrient-poor soils in which it grows.
During the growing season, Sarracenia flava ‘Supermax’ forms an impressive clump of towering pitchers that add height, structure, and bold color to bog plantings. In early spring, striking yellow flowers appear on tall stems before the new pitchers develop, adding another ornamental feature to this remarkable carnivorous plant.
