Sarracenia ‘Alucard’
Sarracenia ‘Alucard’ is a dramatic hybrid pitcher plant known for its dark, brooding coloration and commanding presence in the bog garden. The tall, upright pitchers often develop deep shades of crimson, burgundy, and near-black tones, especially in strong sunlight. Fine veining and a bold, flared throat give the traps an intense and striking appearance that easily draws attention among carnivorous plants.
Each pitcher is a specialized leaf designed to capture insects. Nectar produced along the lip attracts unsuspecting prey, which slips into the smooth interior of the tube and is guided downward by fine hairs toward the digestive fluid at the base. This remarkable adaptation allows the plant to thrive in nutrient-poor, acidic soils where few other plants would prosper.
During the growing season, Sarracenia ‘Alucard’ produces a bold clump of upright pitchers that bring dramatic color and height to bog plantings. The dark tones of the traps contrast beautifully with lighter mosses and companion bog plants, creating a striking display in carnivorous plant collections, outdoor bog gardens, and container bog planters. In early spring, nodding flowers appear on tall stems before the new pitchers emerge.
