Sarracenia ‘Adrian Slack’
Sarracenia ‘Adrian Slack’ is one of the most celebrated and recognizable cultivars among carnivorous plant enthusiasts. Named in honor of renowned carnivorous plant expert Adrian Slack, this remarkable pitcher plant is admired for its elegant white-topped traps marked with intricate crimson veining. The tall trumpet-shaped pitchers rise gracefully from the crown, often displaying deep green to lightly flushed tubes that contrast beautifully with the luminous upper portions of the pitcher.
In bright sunlight, the white tops appear almost translucent, creating a striking display that easily draws attention in the bog garden. The broad hood arches over the mouth of the pitcher, giving the plant a refined and sculptural form that is both ornamental and functional.
Like other North American pitcher plants, the pitchers are specialized leaves designed to capture insects. Nectar produced along the rim attracts prey, which slips into the smooth interior of the tube and is guided downward into digestive fluids at the base. This remarkable adaptation allows the plant to thrive in the nutrient-poor, acidic soils of bog environments.
During the growing season, Sarracenia ‘Adrian Slack’ produces an impressive clump of tall, luminous pitchers that provide dramatic height and color contrast in carnivorous plant plantings. In early spring, nodding flowers appear on tall stems before the new pitchers begin to develop.
