This reproduction captures the delicate charm of Ranunculus pratensis, the meadow buttercup, with its glossy golden-yellow blossoms shining against deeply lobed green foliage. A butterfly hovers nearby while the caterpillar, chrysalis, and eggs appear at the base, tracing the full cycle of metamorphosis. Originally engraved for Johannes Goedaert’s Erucarum Ortus (1717), this image celebrates the simple yet profound beauty of wildflowers and their close ties to insect life.

Johannes Goedaert (1617–1668), a Dutch painter and naturalist from Middelburg, was among the first to study and illustrate insect metamorphosis directly from nature. Without microscopes or formal scientific training, he bred caterpillars and documented their transformations with remarkable accuracy and artistry. His Erucarum Ortus, translated as The Origin of Caterpillars, Worms, and Flies, was published after his death and went on to inspire later naturalists such as Maria Sibylla Merian. Today, his engravings are treasured as milestones in both natural history and botanical art.

This reproduction is a GoGardenNow exclusive, available only through our curated collection of historic botanical and entomological prints.
