This vibrant reproduction showcases Ranunculus dulcis, the sweet buttercup, in full golden bloom. The glossy yellow petals and deep green foliage are paired with the life stages of a butterfly, eggs, caterpillar, chrysalis, and winged adult, capturing the delicate cycle of transformation. This plate originates from Johannes Goedaert’s Erucarum Ortus (1717), a pioneering work at the intersection of art and science.

Johannes Goedaert (1617 to 1668), a Dutch painter and naturalist from Middelburg, was among the first to carefully observe insect metamorphosis directly from life. Without microscopes or formal scientific training, he bred caterpillars and documented their stages with both accuracy and artistry. His Erucarum Ortus, translated as The Origin of Caterpillars, Worms, and Flies, was published after his death and became a foundational text in early entomology, influencing later naturalists like Maria Sibylla Merian. Goedaert’s legacy lies in his ability to elevate even the humblest plants and insects into works of lasting beauty and insight.

This reproduction is a GoGardenNow exclusive, available only through our curated collection of historic botanical and entomological prints.
