Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an ancient herb with a reputation older than most nations. Native to India, the Middle East, and parts of North Africa, this rugged little shrub thrives where summers are hot, soil is lean, and rainfall is scarce. It is not a pampered greenhouse prima donna. It prefers well-drained soil, full sun, and a gardener who understands that the strongest plants often grow in the poorest ground.

Traditionally grown for its roots, Ashwagandha has been used for centuries in herbal practice as a restorative tonic. The plant forms soft green leaves, small bell-shaped flowers, and bright red berries tucked inside papery husks—handsome in their own quiet way. Harvest the roots in late fall after the plant has matured, dry them thoroughly, and store for future use.

In the garden, Ashwagandha is drought tolerant once established and well suited to southern climates and long summers. It performs beautifully in raised beds or large containers where drainage can be carefully managed. Sow after the danger of frost has passed, keep soil lightly moist during germination, and then step back—this is a plant that prefers resilience over indulgence.

If you are building a kitchen garden with purpose—herbs that do more than decorate—Ashwagandha belongs there. Grow it not as a fad, but as part of a tradition that values hardy plants, practical uses, and a bit of old-world wisdom rooted in the soil.

Open Pollinated.  Comes with 10 seeds.  Start indoors 8- 10 weeks before danger of last frost.
