Mentha hortensis verticillata with Butterfly, Colorized Reproduction from Erucarum Ortus (1717)
This colorized reproduction captures Mentha hortensis verticillata (whorled garden mint) from Johannes Goedaert’s Erucarum Ortus (1717). The mint plant, with its serrated green leaves and delicate lavender blooms, is paired with the life stages of a butterfly—caterpillar, chrysalis, and winged adult—demonstrating the close relationship between plant and insect. The vivid coloring restores the vibrancy of Goedaert’s original vision, uniting botanical beauty with entomological study.
Johannes Goedaert (1617–1668), a Dutch painter and naturalist from Middelburg, was one of the first to systematically observe and document insect metamorphosis directly from life. Though self-taught and lacking academic training, he recorded the stages of caterpillars, butterflies, moths, and flies with remarkable accuracy, linking them to their host plants. His posthumously published Erucarum Ortus became a landmark in the history of natural science and inspired later naturalists, including Maria Sibylla Merian. Today, his works remain highly prized for their blend of artistry, curiosity, and devotion to the natural order. A GoGardenNow exclusive.
