Hyacinthus orientalis (Oriental Hyacinth) with Butterfly, Colorized Reproduction from Erucarum Ortus (1717), GoGardenNow Exclusive
This exquisite reproduction portrays Hyacinthus orientalis, the beloved oriental hyacinth, with its violet-purple blossoms arching gracefully along a green stem. Surrounding the plant are the stages of insect life, eggs, caterpillars, pupae, and butterfly, demonstrating the delicate cycle of metamorphosis. The plate is drawn from Johannes Goedaert’s Erucarum Ortus (1717), one of the earliest works to unite botanical art with entomological study.
Johannes Goedaert (1617–1668), a Dutch painter and naturalist of Middelburg, was among the first to systematically observe insects directly from life. With no formal scientific training and without the aid of microscopes, he bred caterpillars, watched their transformations, and recorded them with striking precision. His Erucarum Ortus, translated as The Origin of Caterpillars, Worms, and Flies, was published posthumously and later inspired naturalists such as Maria Sibylla Merian. Goedaert’s work remains admired today for its rare balance of artistry, faithfulness to nature, and scientific importance.
This reproduction is a GoGardenNow exclusive, available only through our curated collection of historic botanical and entomological prints.
