Grossularia hortensis non spinosa florens (Flowering Spineless Gooseberry) with Butterflies, Colorized Reproduction from Erucarum Ortus (1717), GoGardenNow Exclusive
This vibrant reproduction presents Grossularia hortensis non spinosa florens, the flowering spineless gooseberry. Its delicate pale pink-white blossoms and fresh green leaves are shown alongside clusters of developing berries. The composition is alive with insect life: a spiny green caterpillar crawling along the stem, and tortoiseshell-patterned butterflies fluttering nearby, symbolizing the stages of metamorphosis. Originally engraved for Johannes Goedaert’s Erucarum Ortus (1717), this plate reveals the intimate relationship between plants and insects, celebrating both natural beauty and scientific observation.
Johannes Goedaert (1617 to 1668), a Dutch painter and naturalist from Middelburg, was one of the first to study and illustrate insect metamorphosis directly from life. With no microscope or formal training, he raised caterpillars, carefully recorded their transformations, and paired them with their host plants. His Erucarum Ortus, translated as The Origin of Caterpillars, Worms, and Flies, was published after his death and became a cornerstone of early entomology, influencing naturalists such as Maria Sibylla Merian. Today, his engravings remain prized for uniting artistry and scientific insight.
This reproduction is a GoGardenNow exclusive, available only through our curated collection of historic botanical and entomological works.
