Bright as a spark in dry summer gravel, ‘Neon Star’ carries vivid magenta-rose flowers above a tight mound of blue-gray evergreen foliage. The fringed blooms glow against the silvery leaves and release the familiar spicy clove fragrance that has kept dianthus in cottage gardens for generations. Flowering begins in late spring and, with a quick shearing after the first flush, often returns in scattered waves through summer and early fall.

Compact and orderly, this is an excellent plant for edging walkways, softening stonework, and planting along the front of perennial borders where taller plants would crowd the space. It prefers sun and sharply drained soil — raised beds, gravel gardens, and slopes suit it perfectly — and once established it tolerates heat and brief dry periods with little complaint.
