This vivid reproduction depicts Consolida regalis hortensis—commonly known as field larkspur—with its brilliant violet-blue blossoms, surrounded by the life stages of a butterfly. A striped caterpillar crawls along the stem, a chrysalis rests in quiet transformation, and a swallowtail butterfly displays its creamy yellow wings with black markings. Together, they illustrate the intimate bond between plant and insect, a theme central to early natural history.

The original engraving comes from Erucarum Ortus (1717), the groundbreaking work of Dutch painter and naturalist Johannes Goedaert (1617–1668). A self-taught observer from Middelburg, Goedaert was among the first to carefully document insect metamorphosis in relation to host plants. Without the aid of microscopes or formal training, he recorded his findings with artistic precision, inspiring later naturalists such as Maria Sibylla Merian. His work bridges science and art, offering timeless insight into the hidden rhythms of the garden. A GoGardenNow exclusive.
