This reproduction presents Cerasus nigra dulcis florens, the flowering sweet black cherry, in full bloom, its soft pink blossoms and serrated green leaves alive with insect activity. A beetle feeds upon the foliage while larvae crawl below, revealing the balance of beauty and vulnerability in the natural world. The original engraving appeared in Johannes Goedaert’s Erucarum Ortus (1717), one of the earliest illustrated works to unite botany and entomology in careful observation.

Johannes Goedaert (1617 to 1668), a Dutch painter and naturalist from Middelburg, devoted his life to recording the transformations of insects and their relationship with host plants. Without microscopes or formal training, he raised caterpillars, noted their metamorphoses, and documented them with remarkable precision and artistry. His Erucarum Ortus, translated as The Origin of Caterpillars, Worms, and Flies, was published posthumously and went on to inspire later naturalists, including Maria Sibylla Merian. Goedaert’s work remains a testament to the power of patience, observation, and devotion to the natural order.

This reproduction is a GoGardenNow exclusive, available only through our curated collection of historic natural history prints.
