Cerasus ausfera florens (Flowering Cherry) with Insects, Colorized Reproduction from Erucarum Ortus (1717), GoGardenNow Exclusive
This exquisite reproduction presents Cerasus ausfera florens, the flowering cherry, with its soft pink blossoms and fresh green leaves. The plate also depicts the insects associated with the tree: caterpillars, pupae, butterflies, and bees, representing the continual cycle of transformation in nature. Originally engraved for Johannes Goedaert’s Erucarum Ortus (1717), this image unites the beauty of cherry blossoms with the naturalist’s fascination for insect metamorphosis.
Johannes Goedaert (1617–1668), a Dutch painter and naturalist of Middelburg, was one of the first to systematically document the life cycles of insects. Without microscopes or formal scientific training, he raised caterpillars, observed their transformations, and faithfully recorded their stages alongside their host plants. His Erucarum Ortus—translated as The Origin of Caterpillars, Worms, and Flies—was published posthumously and became a foundational text for early entomology, influencing later naturalists such as Maria Sibylla Merian. Today, Goedaert’s works remain highly prized for their union of scientific insight and artistic beauty.
This reproduction is a GoGardenNow exclusive, available only through our curated collection of historic botanical and entomological prints.
