This richly detailed reproduction illustrates Cerasa acida rubra flore pleno, now known as Prunus cerasus, the double-flowering red sour cherry, with its vivid pink blossoms and lush green leaves. The plate is alive with the stages of insect metamorphosis, a caterpillar crawling along the foliage, a chrysalis poised for change, and a butterfly in patterned wings taking flight. The image first appeared in Johannes Goedaert’s Erucarum Ortus (1717), a groundbreaking work that paired plants with the insects that depended upon them.

Johannes Goedaert (1617 to 1668), a Dutch painter and naturalist from Middelburg, was among the earliest to carefully observe insect life cycles directly from nature. Without microscopes or formal scientific training, he raised caterpillars, watched them transform, and recorded their changes with painstaking accuracy. His Erucarum Ortus, translated as The Origin of Caterpillars, Worms, and Flies, was published after his death and went on to inspire later naturalists such as Maria Sibylla Merian. His engravings remain prized for their harmony of science and artistry.

This reproduction is a GoGardenNow exclusive, available only through our curated collection of historic botanical and entomological works.
