This colorized reproduction portrays Atriplex sylvestris, or wild orache, with its gray-green foliage and reddish stems, attended by a moth and bees. The engraving, originally from Johannes Goedaert’s Erucarum Ortus (1717), demonstrates the close relationship between plants and insects, highlighting the beauty of even humble species in the natural order.

Johannes Goedaert (1617–1668), a Dutch painter and naturalist of Middelburg, was among the first to carefully observe and record insect metamorphosis directly from life. Without microscopes or formal academic training, he relied on careful study and artistic skill, producing works that united natural accuracy with aesthetic charm. His Erucarum Ortus—translated as The Origin of Caterpillars, Worms, and Flies—was published posthumously and went on to influence later naturalists such as Maria Sibylla Merian.

This reproduction is offered as a GoGardenNow exclusive, making it a distinctive addition to any botanical or natural history collection.
