Unrooted Oakleaf Hydrangea Stem Cuttings

These are unrooted stem cuttings of Oakleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia), a native southeastern U.S. shrub grown for white flower clusters, oak-shaped foliage, fall color, and exfoliating mature bark.

Important: These are propagation cuttings, not rooted plants. Rooting success varies with season, cutting maturity, propagation method, humidity, temperature, and other growing conditions.

Seasonal Cutting Type

Winter: Typically dormant hardwood material
Spring: Material may be beginning active growth
Growing season: Material may be softwood or semi-hardwood with foliage

Plant Information

Light: Part sun to part shade
Hardiness Zones: 5–9
Mature Size: About 6–8 feet tall and wide
Bloom: Early summer
Native to: Southeastern United States

Propagation Guidance

For leafy softwood or semi-hardwood cuttings, use a clean, free-draining propagation medium, remove leaves from the lower nodes, and insert the stem so at least one node is below the surface. Maintain high humidity, bright indirect light, and even moisture without waterlogging; optional rooting hormone may help. Avoid direct midday sun while cuttings lack roots. Dormant hardwood material can be more difficult to root and may require a different propagation approach. Rooting is not guaranteed, and success depends strongly on cutting condition and season.
