Some plants reward patience; this one rewards curiosity. ‘Beni Shichihenge’ is among the most distinctive variegated Japanese maples — never quite the same leaf twice, and rarely the same tree from one season to the next.

The small leaves open in spring pink, cream, and green, each leaf edged in soft rose tones as if brushed by hand. As temperatures warm, the pink softens and the foliage settles into a mosaic of green and ivory marbling. New growth often emerges with stronger color again, so the tree carries several shades at once. Autumn brings orange to red tones, often with lingering cream variegation, giving the tree a watercolor appearance rather than a single solid color.

Because of its variegation, it prefers protection from harsh afternoon sun, especially in warm southern climates. Give it gentle light and it will reward you with finer color and healthier foliage.

This is not a large shade tree. It is a collector’s plant — a living accent piece meant to be placed where people pass close by and actually look.

Plant it where the light changes during the day. Morning sun and afternoon shade allow the pink edging and marbled leaves to show their full character.
