Populus nigra (Black Poplar) with Leaf Galls, Colorized Reproduction from Erucarum Ortus (1717), GoGardenNow Exclusive
This finely colorized reproduction presents Populus nigra, the black poplar, with its distinctive broad green leaves and curious spherical galls caused by insect activity. The engraving, drawn from Johannes Goedaert’s Erucarum Ortus (1717), reveals both the beauty and the complexity of plant life, showing not only the tree but also its interactions with the insects that depend upon it.
Johannes Goedaert (1617 to 1668), a Dutch painter and naturalist from Middelburg, was one of the first to carefully study insects through direct observation. Though he lacked formal scientific training and tools like the microscope, Goedaert recorded the metamorphosis of caterpillars, flies, and beetles alongside the plants they inhabited. His Erucarum Ortus, translated as The Origin of Caterpillars, Worms, and Flies, was published posthumously and inspired later naturalists, including Maria Sibylla Merian. His works remain treasured for their union of art and science, capturing the natural world with humility and accuracy.
This reproduction is offered as a GoGardenNow exclusive, making it a unique addition for collectors of botanical and entomological art.
