This graceful reproduction illustrates Viola lutea, the yellow violet, with its pale yellow blossoms deepening to golden tones at the center, framed by vibrant green leaves. A butterfly with mottled orange-brown wings hovers nearby, while a caterpillar rests on the foliage, completing the natural cycle of transformation. Originally engraved for Johannes Goedaert’s Erucarum Ortus (1717), this plate exemplifies the naturalist’s dedication to portraying plants and insects together in their living relationships.

Johannes Goedaert (1617 to 1668), a Dutch painter and naturalist from Middelburg, was among the earliest to document insect metamorphosis directly from life. Without formal scientific training or the use of microscopes, he carefully bred caterpillars and recorded their transformations alongside their host plants. His Erucarum Ortus, translated as The Origin of Caterpillars, Worms, and Flies, was published after his death and became a cornerstone of early entomology, influencing later naturalists such as Maria Sibylla Merian. Today, his engravings are prized for their rare union of scientific observation and artistic beauty.

This reproduction is a GoGardenNow exclusive, offered only through our curated collection of historic botanical and entomological prints.
