This reproduction portrays Malus mellia florens, the flowering apple tree, its blossoms unfurling in soft shades of pink, fading to white. The composition includes not only the apple’s buds, leaves, and branch but also the full cycle of insect life, a green caterpillar crawling among the foliage, a chrysalis at rest, and a butterfly with delicate patterned wings. This plate, originally published in Johannes Goedaert’s Erucarum Ortus (1717), captures both the orchard’s beauty and the natural transformations of its inhabitants.

Johannes Goedaert (1617 to 1668), a Dutch painter and naturalist from Middelburg, stands as one of the earliest chroniclers of insect metamorphosis. With no microscope or formal scientific training, he raised caterpillars, studied their life cycles, and carefully recorded their host plants. His Erucarum Ortus, The Origin of Caterpillars, Worms, and Flies, was published after his death and helped shape early entomology, later inspiring figures such as Maria Sibylla Merian. Today, his engravings are treasured for their union of scientific inquiry and artistic skill.

This reproduction is a GoGardenNow exclusive, offered only through our collection of historic botanical and entomological prints.
