Laurentia fluviatilis, commonly known as Blue Star Creeper, is a low-growing, mat-forming perennial that enchants the ground with its fine green foliage and dainty, sky-blue star-shaped flowers. Spreading gently by underground runners, it forms a lush, evergreen carpet that weaves effortlessly through stepping stones, along pathways, or beneath shrubs—flourishing in sun to partial shade. Its delicate appearance belies its resilience, tolerating light foot traffic and adapting to a range of soil types as long as moisture is consistent. Come spring and summer, its bloom is subtle yet enchanting, like a soft constellation resting at your feet.

Perfect for gardeners craving a refined yet naturalistic groundcover, Laurentia fills gaps and softens hardscapes with quiet charm. It’s the sort of plant that turns overlooked nooks into places of beauty and peace. Deer-resistant, easy to manage, and inviting to pollinators, it’s a timeless addition to cottage gardens, woodland edges, or water-wise landscapes. Add Laurentia to your garden today, and let it stitch together your paths and plantings with an artist’s touch.

Comments: Laurentia fluviatilis (aka Isotoma fluviatilis, Pratia pedunculata, Lobelia fluviatilis, Pratia puberula), also known as Blue Star Creeper, Swamp Isotome, Matted Pratia, is a wonderful lawn substitute. Tiny green leaves form a low, dense mat. Foliage is evergreen in warmer climates, semi-evergreen in cooler ones. Small, light blue flowers bloom from spring to fall.

Mature height is 3 inches. Blue Star Creeper spreads to 18 inches. It tolerates a little foot traffic, but bear in mind that foliage and stems that spread over the edges of hard surfaces will be crushed if mashed. This is an excellent ground cover solution for any size area. Blue Star Creeper is perfect around patios and between stepping stones. It works well as a lawn substitute or green roof plant.
