Fragrant Snowbell Tree (Styrax obassia)

The Fragrant Snowbell Tree (Styrax obassia) is a refined ornamental tree admired for its graceful form, lush foliage, and delicately fragrant spring blossoms. Native to Japan and Korea, this elegant small tree produces a charming display of nodding white flowers that hang beneath the branches like tiny bells, filling the air with a gentle, sweet fragrance.

In late spring to early summer, clusters of creamy white, bell-shaped blossoms appear beneath the broad green leaves, creating a beautiful cascading effect. The flowers are especially attractive to bees and other pollinators. After flowering, small ornamental seed capsules develop and persist for part of the season, adding subtle visual interest.

The foliage of Styrax obassia is larger than that of the more commonly known Japanese Snowbell, giving the tree a lush, almost tropical appearance during the growing season. The leaves are soft green with pale undersides, and they may turn yellow in autumn before dropping.
