They Told Us to Recycle. They Were Wrong.

The Climate Cosmos Team reports:

We’ve been living a lie for decades. Only 21% of recyclable material is captured and all materials are under-recycled. This shocking reality means that three-quarters of what we dutifully sort into our blue bins never actually gets recycled. The numbers get even worse when we focus on plastics specifically – 91% of the world’s plastic waste is not recycled and on average, only about 5 to 6 percent of plastic in the U.S. is recycled. Every time you’ve carefully rinsed that yogurt container or peeled the label off a bottle, you’ve been participating in what amounts to environmental theater. The recycling symbol on products isn’t a guarantee – it’s a marketing trick that’s fooled an entire generation into believing they’re saving the planet one sorted item at a time.
