A jewel of the sunny border, ‘Fire Star’ forms a tidy cushion of blue-gray evergreen foliage topped in late spring with brilliant, starry crimson flowers. Each bloom carries the classic spicy clove fragrance that made dianthus a cottage-garden staple long before modern hybrids ever appeared. The compact habit makes it perfect for edging paths, rock gardens, and the front of perennial beds where its color glows against stone, brick, or gravel. After the main bloom, light shearing often encourages scattered rebloom through summer and into early fall.

Thrives in full sun and sharply drained soil — in fact, it prefers lean soil to rich. Excellent for raised beds, slopes, and dry areas where fussier plants struggle. Once established, it tolerates heat and short dry spells and remains attractive year-round in mild climates.
