Liriope and Mondo Ground Cover
Liriope and Mondo are superb ground covers. Both tolerate some foot traffic, are drought tolerant and deer resistant. Mondo is perfect around patios and between stepping stones, and as a lawn alternative. Liriope is exceptional in borders.
Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon) is an exceptionally fine plant for a host of ground cover solutions. Evergreen leaves, 1/8 to 1/4 inch wide, form a low, dense mat. Small, white flowers appear in summer. Bright blue berries appear in fall. Popular selections include Black Mondo, variegated and dwarf mondo.
Liriope, an evergreen, grass-like plant is in the Lily family. Mature height is usually from 8 inches to 18 inches. Flowers usually in shades of blue may be clustered around upright spikes, depending upon the species. Flowers are followed by small black berries with an opalescent sheen.
